The TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winning Sony 900 MHz BabyCall Nursery Monitor is a very good baby monitor. It has some unique features that make it a great choice. Many parents report that the sound is very clear. In addition, the parent unit is waterproof so whether you are sitting by a pool, relaxing in the bathtub, you can enjoy the security of a fully-functional baby monitor regardless of your level of clumsiness or proximity to water.
A unique feature to this baby monitor is that it has a voice activation response. This means that it doesn’t pick up any other noise except vocal sounds from your little one. This is a good feature for infants; however, if you have a toddler you may want a baby monitor that picks up other sounds like them climbing out of the crib, doors opening or the sound of them climbing up onto things.
The BabyCall Nursery Monitor by Sony is a 900 MHz analog monitor with 27 frequency channels to choose from. It comes with one parent unit with a rechargeable battery pack and plug. You can select your own channel if you find you have quite a bit of interference. Most parents agree that it has a clear sound.
This monitor is your basic white with accent. It doesn’t come in any other color. It has a loop at the top to handle or hang from anywhere. It also has lights to indicate sound levels from the baby and low battery.
There is an out-of-range beep that indicates that you’re no longer receiving a signal because of the distance. Some people have said they had trouble with it in their small 800 square foot home. In fact, one of the complaints from several users is that this out-of-range beep goes off regularly. And after further inquiries, we found that many users complained that the monitoring range was very small. So it’s difficult to monitor if you are out of doors or in a large home. But most people say it has been a really reliable monitor, so your experiences may be different.
Another very unique feature is that it is water proof. You can use it by the sink, pool or even in the shower. You don’t have to worry about getting it wet. No other product we tested in this price range has that feature.
This Sony baby monitor is a little difficult to use. In fact, you have to make sure that your unit and the transmitter are both on the same frequency. You also have to make sure that you are plugged in or very well charged. Low batteries cause problems with this baby monitor system.
Sony carries a limited warranty for most of its products. It will cover labor for up to 90 days after purchase. Parts are covered on your product for up to one year after purchase. But after the 90 days you pay for the labor. It doesn’t cover any cosmetic damage, just electronic. And you must present a bill of sale or receipt of purchase at the time service was required.
